Aah! It is not enough to believe in something if it is wrong. Some people believe we exist in a geocentric universe, some that the Holocaust never happened. It is important to our very progress as a species that we believe in facts and logic. Touchie-feelie, emotional religious-apologistism will get us no where.

What's the point of our progress as a species if there is nothing else? If it's just live, die, the end, why does it matter whether we progress, or whether we are even here at all?

Also, to say it is not enough to believe in something if it is wrong, and only to believe in facts and logic is actually not a fallacious argument against the belief in God assuming that you are implying that the existence of God is wrong. To say we must believe in what is factual, and the existence of God is not factual, therefore we should not believe in the existence of God is fallacious on several levels. First of all, you have offered no evidence as to why we should take your word that the existence of God is not factual. Just because you believe it, or wish it to be true, does not make it so. Also, you have made the error of false alternative. Assuming that the assertion that the existence of God is not factual is true, coupled with the assertion that we should only believe in things that are factual, does not mean that we must necessarily believe that God does not exist. The truth that the existence of God is nonfactual does not make it true that the nonexistence of God is factual. It could simply be that the existence of God does not yet have enough evidence to be considered fact. Therefore, the logical conclusion from that argument is not "Believe God does not exist." But rather "Don't believe anything about the existence of God." And if we do only believe in "facts" then hope would not exist at all. And hope is essential to the very progress of our species in an intellectual environment based on more than just instinct and "fight or flight".

To those who say it is dangerous to teach lies I question whether anyone can truly know anything. I don't care for religion but I understand it's an individual's choice so long as it doesn't affect others. Plenty of folks believe in superstitions that aren't related to their religious belief. Like that crackpot on Oprah about choosing your own parents. It's ridiculous when you come across someone who says all religions are a joke and goes on to say our freewill determines everything including our parents. Studies have also shown religion can be a useful tool to regulate stress. Nuns and Buddhist monks can trigger the same areas of the brain. Just different paths to the same destination.

Children's minds are still developing and should not be forced into a belief system. They should have the choice like everyone else. But of course since their parents are of a certain belief system they will be some what forced into it. I don't mind if you believe in things like God or what have you. But just don't try to pass it off as science. Keep Creationism out of the public school system and out of science class. Darwin's theories of evolution is based on observation and experiments done over time. Have you ever observed God? No, you can't. Can you conduct experiments of miracles? These things like other beliefs should be kept in special private schools and special interest classes. They are not science and should not be taught in science classes. If you want to learn about Creationism go to Sunday school or church. If you start to teach these beliefs in science class then you might as well teach Scientology in science classes.

interesting how many people are against this whole idea and make claims about religion being a hoax.

well then, there's enough proof supporting religion as their is against it. can't we call it a stalemate? besides, even if there was a god (not to say there is or isn't, but...), would he/she/they not make it so that their existence could not be proved?

just some food for thought.

That's not being an athiest, that's being an asshole and a hypocrite. Feeding them your belief is no better than them feeding you theirs. And how do you actively not believe in something? You do or you don't.

I may not believe in the bible, but I'm pretty sure it got it right when it said to love your neighbor. Treat others as you'd have them treat you, etc. Are you the same age as these kids? You sure as hell act like it.

You guys are way over-analyzing this. Even if it is 'fake' which you will never know, WHO CARES. All of us have been children and unless you were brought up in the past 10 years when it's basically forbidden to teach religion in school, then you referred to "he/she/they" as GOD. Why must you turn this into a fight of religion. Kids use the word "GOD" when speaking of some higher power, not specifically the "GOD" in the sake of religion. If these were indeed written by young children, why would you assume they even as much know the meaning of "GOD"? And to blame it on their parents? Pardon my language but get your heads out of your asses. You turned something so simple into an argument about religion, when it was supposed to be something for people to enjoy, no religion involved. If you are so against kids speaking of religion why on earth did you click on the page in the first place. Let the easy going population of the world enjoy something for once, without ruining it with your ridiculous finger pointing. Don't you have anything better to do?

To all those of you who say this is "cute" and call for the crtics to "lighten up," I say there is NOTHING cute about the misleading of children, ESPECIALLY in school, if that is where this is supposed to have come from. Kids that are taught that there is a magical superpower in the clouds that explains everything won't develop the same critical reasoning skills as those who are told it's more complicated than that. And that's pretty sad. Religious indoctrination in all its forms is morally repugnant, and is a form of child abuse. Cute, my ass.

i am not an athiest.. though i am not christian, i believe in the same god.. regardless of that, i don't think these were written by children for various reasons (handwriting in some cases, some are a little too precious, etc. etc.) and though i think too much religion is a very dangerous thing, i see no harm in children allegedly believing like this.. i only wish we could have some verification of the authenticity of the claimed source..
Anonymous said :
November 18, 2008 at 6:52 PM
to the above poster, i always found that really touching, that two sides who were fighting against each other decided to put aside their differences and celebrate together.

to the fundamentalists on both sides, will you both just shut up, whilst the parents beliefs are usually followed by the children, later they either come to question what they were taught, or will continue to lead lives with religion intwined.

at the end of the day, whether your a good person so you get to go to heaven, or your a good person because its the right thing to do, who cares?, if your a bad person, the threat of going to hell is usually an idle threat, and if you dont believe in a god, and it turns out there is one and you were a terrible person...guess where your going?

I'm sure belief in god or not, if you do the right thing, good things will come of it

Something to think about

Wow, so many people with so little to say. Whether you believe in a higher power or not is your personal choice. I must say that no matter your beliefs, you influence your interpretation. A christian will reinforce belief in God, while an atheist will reinforce belief in nothing. To the claim that religious indoctrination hampers critical reasoning; you are way off base. I was brought up catholic, and it had no effect on mine. Children like my daughter prove the existence of God. Having never mentioned him to her, and before she was in school, she looked up at the sky one night and said, "God's up there daddy.". She wasn't asking me if he was, she was telling me he was. At a time like that an atheist would tell their child, "No, there is no God.". Our children know the truth long before we tell them. When the brain develops more we logically decide to believe or not. Therein lies our error. Faith and logic do not go hand in hand. I still say that the choice is yours, believe or don't believe. Just stop constantly attempting to force your ways on others, and that goes for those on both sides of the fence. Every one of us will know the truth when we leave this world, the same as we knew it when we came into the world. That said, have a nice day and a nice life. This world doesn't need more cynically pessimistic nonsense.
November 18, 2008 at 7:16 PM
I'm often amazed by how many people will spew anti-religious vitriol when clearly they have no intellectual training on how to actually analyze the place of religion in the world and blindly bleat out "logic" "progress" mantras that they only vaguely understand - just like a religious zealot. Why don't you stop blah blah blahing on the internet and pick up a book you bigots.

Jeez, do you guys run up to little kids while they're at the mall getting their picture taken with Santa and let them know that Santa isn't real? Like many of you, I am an atheist, but you people need to relax and appreciate things for what they are. You wouldn't appreciate Christian's commenting on a post about children writing letters about the non-existence of God.

I like the offer to grant God's wishes if given a magic lamp...

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen"

"...the fool has said, in his heart, that there is no God"

Everything everywhere is composed of atoms, held together by an invisible unexplained force...
God only know what it is....

God is not a lamp you rub and make a wish, and if your wish doesn't come true, then ipso facto there is no God.

If you are reading this, it is because God loves you...

Tony said-I "pray" for the day when forcing a religion onto a child is seen for the evil that it truly is; it's intellectual abuse and no different to sexual or physical abuse.

To claim that teaching a child religion is akin to sexual and physical abuse not only trivializes those who have suffered physical and sexual abuses but is also unconscionable and repugnant. I was raised Southern Baptist and let me assure you the beatings I received from a neighborhood caretaker and molestation I experienced from a separate neighbor did far more harm to me than my Southern Baptist upbringing ever did.

I don't think I have ever said this to anyone before but you seriously disgust me.

I would love to read your source for this information. You do have one, correct? It's written with such authority on the subject, you simply must have some research somewhere that backs this claim up, right?

Oh, wait. You don't because it's not true. My children go to a Christian private school and I can guarantee that they have better critical reasoning skills than the children at the local public school do.

Dear God
I hope you got the letter and
I pray
you can make it better down here.
I don't need a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image,
see them starving on their feet,
'cause they can't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you.
Dear God, I'm sorry to disturb you but,
I feel that i should be heard loud and clear
we all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image,
see them fighting in the street,
'cause they can't make opinions meet about God
I can't believe in you
Did you make disease,
and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind,
After we made you?
And the devil, too?
Dear God,
I don't know if you've noticed but,
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
us crazy humans wrote it you should take a look
and all the people that you made in your image,
still believin' that junk is true,
well i know it ain't, so do you,
Dear God.
i can't believe in....
i don't believe in....
i won't believe in
Heaven or Hell,
no saints no sinners, no devil as well
no pearly gates,
no thorny crown
you're always letting us humans down
the wars you bring
the babes you drown
those lost at sea and never found
and if you're up there you'd percieve, that my heart's here upon my sleeve
if there's one thing i don't believe in
It's You

Dear God.

If children believe in God, maybe they'll care about what they do and say to eachother.
I don't care if you believe it or not, but in every religion, every creed, and that includes those who are atheist and those who simply don't give a damn, there are these good people. Similarly in every culture, creed, religion and so on, there are these bad people.

In response to this: "Aah! It is not enough to believe in something if it is wrong. Some people believe we exist in a geocentric universe, some that the Holocaust never happened. It is important to our very progress as a species that we believe in facts and logic. Touchie-feelie, emotional religious-apologistism will get us no where." If it will get us no where, then where are we going in such a hurry? Whats the goal and destination of all this progress you speak of, about facts and logic? I agree that religion can be used in harmful ways, but there is more to life than facts and logic. I think our progress as a species isn't about knowing, it's about being. If facts are the only thing to worry about with our progress, then what happens when we get to the point where we know everything? (Which I believe is impossible) What happens then? What next? The problem I have with "active atheists" isn't that they criticize institutional religion, but they often criticize having ANY form of spirituality or belief other than science. They get so concerned with everyone using their brains that they throw away the heart. I think we need to use BOTH the brain and the heart, and stop ignoring one or the other. The touchie-feely emotional stuff is the reason why it even matters if the Holocaust ever happened or not. If the touchie-feely and emotional were non-existent, then why would anyone care if the Holocaust was a fact or fiction, other than to have an accurate belief about the events of history?

I think it is sick to decide what children should or shouldn't believe before they are old enough to make the decision for themselves. Parents should provide a guiding good example for children until the children are old enough to responsibly act and think based on their own free will.

As a side, I suppose if the majority of people on this planet believe in a higher power and/or creator, then billions of intelligent human beings are essentially living in a "matrix" ...?

I'm just glad there's a whole bunch of different religions, making it so much easier to see that they're all just comfort blankets for people to wrap themselves in so reality can't get too close. Look at the world, apply Occams razor (he was a Friar y'know) and if you still reckon that a deity-driven explanation is for you then fine but you didn't understand the principle so try again.
And Mike, sorry bro but the burden of 'evidence of god' is square on you and yours cause me and mine can explain with science which only works with evidence.

Is anyone in the world less fun than a militant atheist? Jesus CHRIST, get a sense of humor. Do you get this angry over kids letters to Santa?

I thought these were ADORABLE, particularly the big ups for extinct-ing the dinosaurs. God, you did the right thing. HAHAA

Haters, get a life. Honestly. People can believe whatever they want to believe, and these kids aren't being "brainwashed." Yes they're being taught something, but they'll make the choice for themselves eventually.

To the previous comment..God knows ur heart and he hears your suffering. He loves you and wants to have a close relationship with you. "Call unto me and I will show you great and mighty things which thou knowest not" Jeremiah 33:3

Do not be sad..or afraid because God is near to those who call to Him. Your life has a purpose (one that is very meaningful to Him)

Ahh yes, the religion versus atheism/agnostic on the *gasp* INTERNET! Honestly, lets just keep our personal beliefs to ourselves on the internet, because whether you see a fellow atheist or religious person, no one (not even your own "side") gives a SHIT! Can't we just go back to the civilized battle of whether this is fake or not?

Its amazing how, people try to find wrong in innocence, these are kids, maybe we should all once in while try to remember our thoughts at that age. I guess some of us were perfect with no faults from the time we were born.

Who cares if this is fake or not? have any of you ever tried to have a conversation with a child? some still believe in the tooth fairy, Santa, or anything you tell them, let them be kids and enjoy their innocence.

It is really painful that instead of enjoying the innocence, people are actually sitting there arguing about things that dont really matter.

These were pretty cute :)

I'm enjoying the arrogance of the people who said these children are being fed "lies" about the existence of God. You are just humans--who are you to say what does or doesn't exist in this world? Are you so arrogant as to believe that those who have faith are "stupid" or "spineless" and truly in the wrong? Science has been wrong countless times, so I wouldn't rule out the existence of a higher power. Just sayin'.

This is truly besides the point of this post, but since you brought it up, there's my input.

It always amazes me that most pages with any kind of religious content whatsoever contain a comment section that is overrun with posts by atheists and other anti-religion extremists. Maybe more Christians should try to shine their light on atheist sites.

On another note, the only ignorant ones are those who ASSUME something (or SOMEONE) doesn't exist just because he or she doesn't believe in it (or HIM).

If I am wrong and atheists are right. I've lost nothing when I die, but if I'm right, they've lost everything.

GOD DOESN'T BELIEVE IN ATHEISTS!!!

The argument here is not about the existence of God but the authenticity of these letters. They are fake, all written on the same type of paper, none signed with a last name.

If they weren't presented as real, I would not be offended.

Why be offended then? Well, because these letters all suggest children either have some inner wisdom, are comedians, or are stupidly cute. Which, though maybe some people don't want to acknowledge it, isn't true.

What's worse is that the author has created some fifty fake relationships with God and presented them as real. I think the religious and the atheists can agree that's wrong.

WOW !!!! for all you atheists on this page, it really blows my mind that you think it's ok to be narrow minded when it has ANTHING to do with God but if a Christian doesn't agree with you they are in your mind narrow minded....kind of a double standard...what a group of angry nasty people !!!! No wonder our country is such a mess..oh that's right after 9/11 thing's did change but you're back to your nasty behavior what kind of upbringing did you all have to be so judgemental ?

Wow, you all are extremely mean to kids, don't make fun of them it's completely unnecessary. As for you faith, I don't care what you believe, neither do these kids, just relax. It's funny because people say Christians react harshly, but this goes to show just how immature people who don't believe in God can be, immature enough to make fun of kids.

To all the non-believers and people filled with hatred for those with faith, look to your science, and hold to your books, and study your fossils. Tell yourself (for whatever personal reason that turned into a trauma that made you hate your Creator)its all make-believe*.
But when you look back into the studies, and genuine factual science of the collective minds of this planet, see the part where the majority of scientists are telling you THERE IS ACTUALLY MORE PROOF AND EVIDENCE POINTING TOWARDS THE GENUINE EXISTENCE OF GOD, THAN NOT.
Ultimately; you are wrong. and your own "joke" is on you, and it is you people who will be crying and begging when The Rapture happens, asking for a second chance..but by then...will it be too late? Get some perspective on the facts, instead of your unsubstantiated rhetoric.

There are good atheists, and there are bad athiests. There are good christians, and bad christians(the overly eccentric ones I mean). There are a good and bad variety of everything. I'm christian and I have friends who are atheist, and we never even talk about religion or the lack thereof. Sure, I can see how it would be annoying for a christian to try to "witness" to you or even "convert" you. All I'm saying is just because there are some crazy, and I mean CRAZY christians, it doesn't mean we are all like that.

Actually I think it's wonderful that people at all can believe in something greater. I do myself, and I enjoy these comments so much :) I think it's super amazing that these small children show their thoughts in their letters! :)

"interesting how many people are against this whole idea and make claims about religion being a hoax.

well then, there's enough proof supporting religion as their is against it. can't we call it a stalemate? besides, even if there was a god (not to say there is or isn't, but...), would he/she/they not make it so that their existence could not be proved?

just some food for thought. "

I do agree that there is not enough support in proof of God. But there are no ways to disprove it either.

Throughout the whole Bible no one says anything about fact. They speak of wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge is as close as you will come. But what does Jesus specificaly say? "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live."
(John 11:25)
See to me, that means that everyone is saved through faith. Not proof. I highly doubt that anyone can find the passage in the Bible where it says " And ye (because someone who liked the KJV would try) whomsoever finds my hidden message in the future will know everlasting life!" The argument of no proof of God is simply ignorant, because people are saved through faith in God. This arguement is not considered valid but most Christians for this reason. Not Knowledge. Not proof.
As far as some other statements from people who say that this is child abuse(if it's really written by kids) is kinda odd. If anything I would think (if i was an atheist) that it would be a handy way to teach a kid morality. Granted, Christian morals, but I seriously doubt that anyone would argue against Christian morals. Beliefs maybe, but not morals. Things that society at large can pretty much agree with. Don't kill, don't lie, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Things like that. And even though they are gettting taught this at a young, impressionable age, there is nothing stopping a child from growing up and deciding what they believe. I did it. I've read the "translation" of the Koran. I've read the Book of Morman. I'v researched other religions including Judaism, Rastafari, and even Zoroasrtrianism (I think that's spelled right). I went to school and learned the theory of evolution (by the way, Darwin was a Christian) (so was Mendal I think, although I can't speak on his peas' beliefs). I still believe what I believe. I believe in offering what I believe to others if they want to take the time to listen (er...read) and I believe in not pushing it once they want to stop talking about it. Now honestly, other than using up a bit of time did anything I say hurt anyone?

Okay, now to other relgionist, Christian or otherwise, research a bit into something before you argue against it. Not because you might change your mind but because you then have the ability to argue against it. I'm so tired of hearing people, supposed learned preachers included, talk about the other beliefs and how they are wrong and not be able to tell me why it's wrong, other than it's not what the Bible says. God gave you a brain, use it.

Disclaimer: If I misspelled anything or used incorrect grammer, get over it. Your computer nor mine will burst into flame because of a typo.

As if my post before this wasn't long enough.

To all those who ask why do people suffer if there really is a God, why do bad things happen to good people, etc. What kind of choice would it be if no matter what you chose, only good things happened. Seriously. I believe that God made a dynamic world. One that he can control every facet but doesn't. What good would free will be if we all had everything we wanted or needed. Now while some people don't choose to starve, others do choose to let them. So stop arguing the existance of God and go feed someone who's hungry, clothe someone who needs clothes, or at least just make the world a better place because of your actions. Not arguements. And please no one comment back with "why arn't you?" I'm not trying to be holier than thou, as the saying goes, just telling you a way to make the world a better place. That's what your arguements are intended for I would hope. To improve the world.

- Jonathan

Funness: I made at least one intentional typo. Take time out of arguing to find it! And no, it's not the word argueing, because i just realized it's actually arguing.

Its really not that hard to figure out. Just answer this. If the entire galaxy evolved from from one little micro organism, where did that micro organism come from?

If we're here because of a "big bang", where did THAT come from?

I wasn't going to do it. I refused to comment. But I can't help but get drug into a religious battle when all of you are obviously having so much fun.

Firstly, to the Agnostics, and Atheists. Stop a second and realize that the 'Organized Religion' that people stuff down their kids throats, is infact no different then spouting off with how it's all crap and fake; which incidentally you guys do. We could care less about your opinions on God, and how it never happened. Get over yourselves. I'm truly sorry you're unhappy in your life, and feel the need to try and bring down someone elses dreams.

Secondly; to the evolutionists..Just..No. We don't have the time to go into how wrong you are. Darwin said the Survival of the Fittest. Not dinosaurs turning into birds. Jesus.

Thirdly, well that about ends my rant. These were written by adults, the reason: Undisclosed. However, ranting and waving your picket sign does nothing more then prove that you need to be noticed. Which is what I'm doing, and will probably catch flak for. But I don't care.

It's got to stop. Either that or you guys can kill yourselves off. Remember: A mob is only as smart as it's stupidest member. And the Internet my friends, is one big unruly ass mob.

Ethan.

Oh right. Wasn't done.

For those of you blasting off at the mouth screaming how these kids will grow up illusioned, and misguided.

I hate to tell you guys this. But we all have a choice, free will and all that. Something the good Lord granted us.

Do you really believe for one second that being raised in the Church will forever condemn you to being a bible thumping 'Convert the Heathens by sword! ' time of person? No, they change. Even if these letters WERE real, by the time these kids hit high school, they'll be pot heads, drunken fools, oh and teen-sex having kiddos, who forsake god as ' That bastard up there.' Or will be guided down a different path, just as many of you Agnostic, and Athiests have been led down.

And for any Wiccans out there, stop screaming at the Christians, you guys are Pagans. Not freaking witches, or druids. And in all honesty, being a Wiccan means you're a healer.

Moving on..I think I'm down with my two cent Euro piece.

Ethan.
